## How much IOF do I pay on a card purchase abroad in 2026?

The IOF on purchases and cash withdrawals abroad with a credit or prepaid card is 3.5%. The rate was 3.38% from January 2025. It rose to 3.5% after the fiscal measures announced by the Ministry of Finance on May 22, 2025. Those measures also stopped the gradual cut planned since 2022 (Nubank, page updated August 25, 2026).

The IOF comes on top of the exchange rate used by your card issuer. On a $1,000 purchase abroad, it adds $35 before any bank spread. Pay in stablecoins; local tax and exchange rules still apply. See the [Card Friction Index](https://satfares.com/card-friction-index/) for other countries.

## What changed for stablecoin payments in Brazil in 2026?

Since February 2, 2026, stablecoin operations follow foreign exchange rules. The Banco Central do Brasil issued Resolutions 519, 520 and 521 on November 10, 2025. They create a licence for virtual asset service providers and set their rules of conduct (Cointelegraph, November 11, 2025).

- **Resolution 521:** buying, selling or exchanging fiat-pegged virtual assets, including international transfers and payments with them, is treated as a foreign exchange operation.
- **Cap:** transactions with unlicensed foreign counterparties are reported as capped at $100,000 per transfer.
- **Self-custody wallets:** transfers to and from your own wallet are covered when a service provider handles them; the provider must identify the wallet owner.
- **Reporting:** mandatory reporting of cross-border operations started on May 4, 2026.

In practice, the Brazilian platform where you buy USDT applies these rules to your purchase and to your transfers. We have not verified whether IOF applies to a stablecoin operation classed as foreign exchange. Ask your provider or a Brazilian tax adviser.

## Is crypto legal in Brazil?

Yes. Brazilian residents can hold, buy and sell crypto. Since February 2, 2026, crypto service providers come under an authorisation regime of the Banco Central do Brasil. The Central Bank rules do not ban self-custody wallets. They require the provider to identify the owner of a wallet and to check the origin and destination of the assets it transfers.

## USDT or USDC: which stablecoin should I use from Brazil?

Both work, but on different networks. SatFares accepts USDT on Tron (TRC-20) or Ethereum (ERC-20), and USDC on Ethereum (ERC-20) only. USDC sent on Solana, Base or Polygon is not accepted. Check the network in your Brazilian platform before you withdraw.

- USDT on TRC-20 is credited after 20 confirmations; ERC-20 tokens after 12.
- Send each token only to the address shown for its network. Funds sent on another network may be lost.
- The minimum top-up is $25. The price shown is the fare found live for all passengers, in US dollars, taxes included, with no fee added; the final total is confirmed before you are charged.

Our guide [USDT or USDC for flights](https://satfares.com/usdt-or-usdc-for-flights/) compares the two coins, network by network.

## Held, not charged

1. **Your balance is held at checkout** — The exact total shown is held on your balance. Nothing is charged yet.
2. **We book the ticket for you** — Bookings are made on request: our team books the ticket with the airline and confirms the final total. If it is higher than the amount held, you accept the new total or the amount is released.
3. **Charged only when the e-ticket number is issued** — Your balance is charged when the airline issues the e-ticket number. If we can't get the ticket issued in time, the full amount is released to your balance.

If the total changes before the ticket is issued, you see the new total and choose: accept it, or have the amount released. Nothing extra is ever taken without your agreement.

## What must I declare to the Receita Federal?

Crypto held on December 31, 2025 above R$5,000 must be declared in the annual income tax return (meutudo, February 10, 2026). From July 2026, the DeCripto declaration becomes the main channel for reporting crypto operations to the Receita Federal. Spending crypto that has gained value since you bought it may create a taxable gain. Paying in crypto may be a taxable event in your country. Ask a Brazilian accountant about your own operations.

## What data does the airline need for a flight from São Paulo?

No ID upload, no selfie at checkout. Airline ID rules still apply. For each traveller: the names exactly as in the passport, the date of birth, the gender and the passport details for an international flight. We pass them to the airline only. Flights to the United States also need the visa or travel authorisation that applies to your passport. More in [what data airlines require](https://satfares.com/what-data-airlines-require/).

## Flights from Brazil paid in crypto: questions

### Can I pay for an international flight from Brazil with USDT?

Yes. Top up your SatFares balance with USDT on Tron (TRC-20) or Ethereum (ERC-20), then book. The amount is held at checkout and charged only when the airline issues the e-ticket number. Our team books the ticket on request; if it can't be issued in time, the full amount is released to your balance.

### Is there IOF when I pay SatFares in crypto?

SatFares does not charge IOF and no card is used. The IOF of 3.5% applies to card purchases abroad. Since February 2, 2026, buying or paying with stablecoins counts as a foreign exchange operation under Central Bank Resolution 521. We have not verified the IOF treatment of that operation: ask your provider or an accountant.

### What is the IOF rate on international card purchases in 2026?

3.5% on purchases and withdrawals abroad with a credit or prepaid card. The rate rose from 3.38% after the fiscal measures announced on May 22, 2025, according to a Nubank page updated on August 25, 2026. The bank's exchange rate and spread come on top.

### Can I send USDC on Solana or Base?

No. SatFares accepts USDC on Ethereum (ERC-20) only. USDT is accepted on Tron (TRC-20) or Ethereum (ERC-20). A token sent on a network we don't support may be lost, so check the network in your Brazilian platform before you withdraw.

### Do I have to declare crypto in Brazil?

Yes, above certain amounts. Holdings above R$5,000 on December 31, 2025 go in the annual income tax return. From July 2026, the DeCripto declaration is the main channel for reporting crypto operations to the Receita Federal. Ask an accountant about your own case.

### Which routes from Brazil are on SatFares?

Seven routes in our list depart from Brazil: São Paulo to Lisbon, Miami, Orlando, Santiago, New York and Madrid, and Rio de Janeiro to Lisbon. All are on sale. Our live search also accepts other routes from Brazilian airports, and our team books the ticket on request.

### Do you sell hotels in Lisbon or Orlando?

No. We only sell flights; each booking is a single travel service. A SatFares booking is not a travel package, so EU package travel protection does not apply. The ticket is issued by the airline in the traveller's name, and you arrange your stay in Lisbon, Miami or Orlando separately.
