Changeable flights paid in crypto, for nomads

How fare types, change fees and fare differences work when you pay in crypto, and how to keep your options open when your dates move.

Last updated: · 7 min read

Quick answer

Can I book a changeable flight and pay in crypto?

Yes. SatFares, a flight booking site paid only in crypto, sells each ticket with the airline's own fare rules. These rules decide whether you can change it and at what cost. Any amount due for a change is paid from your crypto balance, never by card. If you cancel instead, the refund allowed by the fare is credited to your balance, which never expires. Your balance is held, not charged, until the e-ticket is issued.

Can I change a flight I paid for in crypto?

Yes, when the fare rules of your ticket allow it. The way you paid does not change those rules. Your ticket is issued by the airline in your name. Your flight booking will be bound by the fare rules and Conditions of Carriage of the airline(s).

So the real question is the fare. Some fares allow date changes, some charge a fee for them, and some allow none. On SatFares, baggage and fare rules (changes, refunds) are confirmed with your booking and shown on your e-ticket. Read them before you plan a change.

What are fare types, and why do they matter for changes?

Airlines often sell the same cabin under several fare types, sometimes called fare brands. Each fare type has its own rules for changes, refunds and baggage. airBaltic, for example, names fare types such as GREEN and GREEN plus on its official payment page.

What usually differs from one fare type to the next:

  • Date or time changes: allowed, allowed for a fee, or not allowed.
  • Refunds: refundable minus a penalty, or only the taxes back.
  • Baggage and seats: included or extra.

Fare types with more flexibility usually cost more. The exact rules are written by each airline. If your dates may move, a fare that allows changes can cost less than a new ticket later.

How much does it cost to change a flight?

A change has up to two parts, both set by the airline:

  1. The change fee written in your fare rules. It can be zero, a fixed amount, or the change may not be allowed.
  2. The fare difference, when the new flight costs more than the fare you paid.

We do not publish average change costs: we have no measured data yet. The amount for your ticket depends on the airline, the fare type and the new date. Ask before you decide, and compare it with the price of a new ticket.

How do I pay for a change with crypto?

From your SatFares balance, like the booking itself. Email [email protected] with your booking reference and the new date you want. Our team checks the change with the airline. We tell you the total due before anything happens.

  • If you accept: the amount is paid from your balance. Top up first if needed, from $25 in BTC, USDT, USDC, ETH, SOL, LTC.
  • If you decline: your ticket stays as it is, and nothing is taken.

Nothing extra is taken without your agreement. This differs from some crypto sellers. As of October 2026, Cryptorefills says changes and extra fees on its flights are payable in fiat money.

What happens to my money if I cancel instead of changing?

The fare rules decide, and the refund is credited to your balance. A refundable fare gives back the airline's refund minus its penalty. A non-refundable fare gives back the taxes the airline refunds, if any.

For nomads, the balance rule matters. The rule, word for word: Unused balance stays on your account and never expires. Amounts released when a booking can't be confirmed, or refunded after a cancellation you did not request, can be withdrawn in USDT or USDC; the rest of the balance is not refundable.

So credit from your own cancellation stays on your balance with no time limit, ready for the next trip. It can't be withdrawn in crypto. See the full refund policy.

What if the airline changes my flight?

Then the airline's change, not yours, opens your refund rights. If the airline cancels or heavily changes your flight and you refuse the new one, you get a refund in USDT or USDC within 7 days, or a balance credit, as you choose.

In the US, a heavy change includes leaving 3 hours or more earlier, or arriving 3 hours or more later, on a domestic itinerary. The threshold is 6 hours on an international itinerary (14 CFR 260.2). If you accept the airline's new flight, there is no refund.

Read the guide: Airline cancelled? Your refund rights.

How can nomads keep their flight plans flexible?

Plan around the fare rules, not around a promise of free changes.

  • Dates may move: choose a fare type that allows changes. Check its change fee in the fare rules confirmed with your booking.
  • Dates are fixed: a basic fare is often enough, since you will not change it.
  • Names: enter them exactly as in the passport. A date change is possible on many fares; a change of person is not.
  • Balance: keep credit from a cancelled trip for the next booking. It never expires.
  • 24 hours: we do not promise a free cancellation in the first 24 hours. In the US, that rule binds airlines, not ticket agents.
  • Stablecoins: top up in USDT or USDC if you want a stable dollar amount. See USDT or USDC for flights.

Questions about changeable flights

Can I change the date of a flight I paid in crypto?

Yes, if the fare rules of your ticket allow it. The airline sets those rules, and paying in crypto does not change them. A change costs the airline's change fee, if any, plus any fare difference. At SatFares, the amount due is paid from your crypto balance after you accept it.

Do you charge in fiat money for changes?

No. SatFares takes crypto only, so any amount due for a change is paid from your balance, topped up in BTC, USDT, USDC, ETH, SOL, LTC. As of October 2026, Cryptorefills says changes and extra fees on its flights are payable in fiat money.

Can I change the traveller's name?

Usually not. Airline tickets are not transferable, and the name must match the passport. Some airlines accept small spelling corrections, often for a fee. If the airline refuses, the case is treated as a cancellation by you, under the fare rules.

Can I cancel for free within 24 hours?

We do not promise it. In the US, the 24-hour rule binds airlines, for bookings made 7 days or more before departure. It does not bind ticket agents. What you get back when you cancel depends on the fare rules, and it is credited to your balance.

Does my balance credit expire?

No. Unused balance stays on your account and never expires. Credit from your own cancellation can pay any future booking. It can't be withdrawn: only released amounts and refunds after an airline cancellation can be withdrawn in USDT or USDC.

Is a one-way ticket more flexible than a return?

It depends on the airline and the fare. Each ticket carries its own fare rules. Two one-way tickets let you change or cancel each leg under its own rules. A return ticket may be priced differently. Compare the totals in our live search; the fare rules are confirmed with your booking.

What if the airline moves my flight by several hours?

You may be owed a refund if you refuse the new flight. In the US, 3 hours or more counts on a domestic itinerary, and 6 hours on an international one. At SatFares, you then get a refund in USDT or USDC within 7 days, or a balance credit, as you choose.
