What does an Indian card charge on a payment abroad?

A foreign currency fee, plus GST on that fee. The SBI Card terms list a foreign currency transaction fee of 3.5% on most cards. Some cards pay less: 3% on SBI Card Miles, 2.5% on Miles Prime, and 1.99% on cards such as AURUM, Elite and Miles Elite. GST at 18% is added to every fee.

Paying in rupees does not always remove the fee. SBI Card charges a 3.5% dynamic currency conversion fee on rupee transactions of Rs 1,000 or more made abroad or at merchants registered outside India. A foreign airline website that bills you in rupees can trigger it. Pay in stablecoins; local tax and exchange rules still apply.

How is crypto taxed in India when I spend it?

Spending crypto is a transfer of a virtual digital asset (VDA), and the income from it is taxed. The rules in force since 2022:

  • 30% tax plus 4% cess on income from the transfer of a VDA (Section 115BBH of the 1961 Act). Only the cost of acquisition can be deducted.
  • No set-off: a loss on a VDA can't reduce other income.
  • 1% TDS (Section 194S) on transfers above Rs 10,000 in a financial year, or Rs 50,000 for specified persons.

The Income-tax Act 2025 replaced the 1961 Act on April 1, 2026, without changing the underlying tax policy (CBDT press release). Guides updated in September 2026 still describe the same 30% rate and 1% TDS. Spending coins worth more than you paid for them can create taxable income. Paying in crypto may be a taxable event in your country. Ask a chartered accountant how to report it.

Holding and trading crypto is not banned in India, but service providers face strict anti-money laundering rules. Every virtual digital asset service provider that serves India, onshore or offshore, must register with the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU-IND) as a reporting entity. On September 9, 2026, FIU-IND sent notices to 15 unregistered providers and ordered their apps and websites to be taken down (News On AIR).

The government also warns that crypto products are unregulated and risky.

Indian foreign exchange rules also apply to you. Under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) lets a resident individual send up to USD 250,000 per financial year, from April to March. Private visits abroad count towards that limit (ICICI Bank). We have not verified how FEMA, the LRS and the tax rules treat a crypto payment to a seller outside India. Ask a chartered accountant before you pay.
