Buy plane tickets with Bitcoin (BTC): on-chain, 2 confirmations

Last updated: · 6 min read

Quick answer

Can I pay for flights with Bitcoin?

Yes. You can pay for flights with Bitcoin at SatFares, a flight booking site paid only in crypto. Send on-chain BTC; Lightning is not accepted. Your top-up from $25 is converted to US dollars at the rate locked on the payment page and credited after 2 confirmations. At checkout, the fare is held, not charged, until the airline issues the e-ticket.

Can I buy plane tickets with bitcoin?

Yes. As of October 2026, you can buy plane tickets with bitcoin on SatFares, a flight booking site paid only in crypto. You top up your balance with on-chain BTC, credited after 2 confirmations, then book from that balance. The airline issues the ticket in the traveller's name.

Few airlines take bitcoin themselves. In our airline crypto index, checked on October 12, 2026, airBaltic accepts bitcoin through BitPay, for GREEN and GREEN plus fares only. For other airlines, you pay a travel seller that accepts crypto, such as SatFares. Compare sellers: crypto flight booking sites compared.

How is my Bitcoin converted to US dollars?

Your balance is kept in US dollars. You choose the top-up amount in dollars, and the payment page converts it into BTC at a locked rate. The page also shows how long that rate is locked. The BTC amount is rounded up and ends with a few unique digits, which identify your payment.

  • Transaction seen while the rate is locked: the locked rate applies.
  • Transaction seen after the lock ends: its dollar value can differ from the amount you chose. Don't send a second payment: keep the transaction ID (TXID) and follow the payment page.
  • Exchange fee: if your exchange takes its withdrawal fee from the amount you type, add the fee so that the full amount arrives.

After the credit, your balance no longer moves with the price of Bitcoin. The price of the ticket you book is then safe from BTC price moves.

How much BTC do I send for a $500 ticket?

You send $500 worth of BTC at the locked rate, plus the network fee your wallet adds. The $500 is the price shown at checkout, which is the fare found live for all passengers, in US dollars, taxes included, with no fee added; the final total is confirmed before you are charged.

  1. Top up $500. The payment page divides it by the BTC rate, rounds up, and adds a few unique units.
  2. Send exactly that BTC amount while the rate is locked. The page shows until when.
  3. Your wallet adds the Bitcoin network fee on top of the amount.
  4. After 2 confirmations, your balance shows $500.

We don't print a BTC amount here, because it depends on the rate at the moment you top up.

What sets the Bitcoin network fee?

The size of your transaction and the demand for block space. The Bitcoin developer documentation states that transactions pay fees based on their size in bytes. The fee per byte rises when demand for space in blocks rises.

A transaction that spends many small coins is larger, so it costs more to send. Your wallet usually lets you choose a faster or slower fee. A very low fee can delay the 2 confirmations. If the transaction is seen only after the rate lock ends, its dollar value can differ from the amount you chose.

Can I pay with Bitcoin Lightning or a BTC token on another network?

No. Only on-chain Bitcoin is accepted. A Lightning payment does not create the on-chain transaction our check reads. BTC tokens on other networks, such as BNB Smart Chain or Ethereum, are not bitcoin on the Bitcoin network. On an exchange, choose the network called Bitcoin or BTC for the withdrawal. Details: Lightning and Monero.

Because confirmations take time, and live fares can change while you wait. When your balance is already credited, the total is held from it at checkout without waiting for the blockchain. Our team then books the ticket on request, and your balance is charged only when the e-ticket number is issued.

We sell airline tickets paid in crypto. Our offer is included and marked. As of October 12, 2026, Cryptorefills does not accept on-chain BTC for flights, because its payment deadline is too short. A prepaid balance removes that problem. Other sellers: crypto flight booking sites compared.

How are refunds paid if I paid in Bitcoin?

In stablecoins, not in BTC. If the airline cancels, you get a refund in USDT or USDC within 7 days, or a balance credit, as you choose. Your balance is in US dollars, so the refund keeps its dollar value whatever Bitcoin does. If you cancel yourself, the fare rules apply and any refund is credited to your balance.

Bitcoin payments: common questions

How many confirmations does a Bitcoin payment need?

Two confirmations on the Bitcoin network. The payment page counts them as they arrive, and your balance is credited in US dollars when the second one is reached. A low network fee can make the first confirmation take longer. If you close the tab, the pending top-up stays under Billing in your account.

What happens if the price of Bitcoin drops while I wait?

If your transaction is seen while the rate is locked, the locked rate applies, so the drop does not change your top-up. The payment page shows how long the rate is locked. A transaction seen after the lock ends can be valued at a different rate. After the credit, your balance stays in US dollars.

My transaction arrived after the rate lock ended. What should I do?

Don't send a second payment. Keep the transaction ID (TXID) from your wallet and follow the instructions on the payment page. If you need help, contact support with the TXID, the amount and the time you sent it. The dollar value of a late transaction can differ from the amount you chose.

Can I get a refund in Bitcoin?

No. Refunds are paid in USDT or USDC. If the airline cancels, you get a refund in USDT or USDC within 7 days, or a balance credit, as you choose. Your balance is kept in US dollars from the moment your BTC top-up is credited.

Can I send BTC from an exchange?

Yes, on the Bitcoin network. Choose "Bitcoin" as the withdrawal network, not Lightning or a token network. Some exchanges take their fee from the amount you type: make sure the BTC that arrives matches the exact amount shown. If needed, add the exchange fee to the amount you type.

Is the ticket price different when I pay in BTC?

No. The price shown is the fare found live for all passengers, in US dollars, taxes included, with no fee added; the final total is confirmed before you are charged, whichever coin you use. The BTC amount simply depends on the rate when you top up. The Bitcoin network fee is paid by your wallet to the network, not to SatFares.

Is paying for a flight with Bitcoin taxable?

It may be. Paying in crypto may be a taxable event in your country, because spending bitcoin can count as selling it. Check local rules. SatFares does not give tax advice. In the United States, the IRS says payments for goods or services with digital assets must be reported.

Can I book Emirates with Bitcoin on SatFares?

Yes, on request: Emirates flights can be booked with a SatFares balance topped up in BTC. Emirates itself accepts crypto only through Crypto.com Pay, for UAE residents paying in AED. See Emirates and crypto. On SatFares, the ticket is issued by Emirates in the traveller's name, like any other ticket.
