Yes for individuals, with limits for banks. In June 2021, three authorities issued a joint statement: the Banco de México (Banxico), the Ministry of Finance (SHCP) and the banking regulator (CNBV). They said that virtual assets are not legal tender in Mexico. They also said that Mexican financial institutions may not carry out or offer operations with virtual assets to the public (IDC Online, June 29, 2021).

The statement concerns banks and other financial institutions. It does not prohibit individuals from holding crypto, and the authorities used it to warn the public about the risks of virtual assets.

What does a Mexican card charge for a flight bought abroad?

It depends on the card, and some cards list no separate fee for purchases abroad. The fact sheet of the BBVA México Tarjeta Azul, issued on August 4, 2026, has no line for purchases abroad in its commission table. It lists commissions for cash withdrawals, including at ATMs abroad, and states that all commissions are in pesos plus VAT (IVA).

Even without a fee, the purchase is converted from dollars or euros to pesos at the rate used by the bank or the card network. Check the fact sheet (carátula) of your own card. Pay in stablecoins; local tax and exchange rules still apply. The Card Friction Index shows where cards cost more.

Held, not charged

  1. Your balance is held at checkout

The exact total shown is held on your balance. Nothing is charged yet.

  2. We book the ticket for you

Bookings are made on request: our team books the ticket with the airline and confirms the final total. If it is higher than the amount held, you accept the new total or the amount is released.

  3. Charged only when the e-ticket number is issued

Your balance is charged when the airline issues the e-ticket number. If we can't get the ticket issued in time, the full amount is released to your balance.

If the total changes before the ticket is issued, you see the new total and choose: accept it, or have the amount released. Nothing extra is ever taken without your agreement.

Taxes and documents for a flight from Mexico

We have not verified the Mexican tax treatment of spending crypto on a flight, so we do not state a rate. Paying in crypto may be a taxable event in your country. Keep the date, coin, network and amount of each top-up, and ask a Mexican accountant (contador).
