Does FlySafair accept Bitcoin?

Last updated: · 4 min read

Quick answer

Does FlySafair accept Bitcoin?

Reportedly, yes. Daily Maverick wrote on March 15, 2026 that FlySafair, the South African low-cost airline, takes bitcoin through MoneyBadger and Zapper. You scan a QR code and pay over the Lightning network, and the airline receives rand. We could not confirm it on FlySafair's own site. SatFares, a flight booking site paid only in crypto, takes on-chain BTC, USDT and USDC instead. The amount is held, not charged, until the e-ticket is issued.

How does FlySafair's bitcoin payment work?

Through a South African payment chain. According to Daily Maverick, the passenger picks the crypto option, a dynamic QR code appears, and the passenger scans it with a Lightning wallet. MoneyBadger converts the bitcoin, so FlySafair receives the invoiced amount in rand.

The article says this removes chargeback risk for the airline and speeds up settlement. The same chain serves Lift, another South African airline, through Ozow.

Why is FlySafair marked "reported"?

Because the only source is the press. We tried to read FlySafair's payment page on October 12, 2026, and it did not load. Until the airline's own page shows the option, we keep the status "reported (not confirmed on the official website)".

This matters in South Africa: South African Airways dropped its bitcoin option without notice in early 2026. Check the checkout before you rely on it.

Can I pay FlySafair with on-chain bitcoin or USDT?

Not through the reported option, which uses Lightning. SatFares works the other way: you send BTC on the Bitcoin network, USDT on TRC-20 or ERC-20, or USDC on ERC-20. That tops up a balance from $25.

FlySafair on SatFares: Available. Its flights appear when our live search returns them, and our team books the ticket on request. FlySafair's hubs are Johannesburg (JNB) and Cape Town (CPT).

What if FlySafair cancels my flight?

On a SatFares booking, you get a refund in USDT or USDC within 7 days, or a balance credit, as you choose. If you cancel yourself, FlySafair's fare rules apply, and any refund is credited to your balance. The Daily Maverick report does not say how a Lightning payment to FlySafair is refunded. Your flight booking will be bound by the fare rules and Conditions of Carriage of the airline(s).

Frequently asked questions

Does FlySafair accept Bitcoin in 2026?

The press says so: on March 15, 2026, Daily Maverick reported that FlySafair takes bitcoin through MoneyBadger's platform via Zapper. We could not confirm it on FlySafair's own website on October 12, 2026, so our index marks it "reported". Lift is in the same report.

Which wallets can pay FlySafair in bitcoin?

Lightning wallets. The report names Blink, Strike, Phoenix and Zeus, and says some of them need the MoneyBadger app to scan a merchant QR code. An exchange account that can't send over Lightning will not work for this option. SatFares does not take Lightning.

Does FlySafair keep the bitcoin?

No. According to Daily Maverick, MoneyBadger converts the bitcoin and FlySafair receives the invoiced amount in rand. The airline does not hold crypto. The same model applies to Lift, according to the report. On SatFares, your crypto funds a balance, and our team books the ticket with the airline on request.

Does SatFares accept Lightning?

No. SatFares accepts BTC on the Bitcoin network, credited after 2 confirmations, but not Lightning or Monero. Stablecoins are also accepted: USDT on TRC-20 or ERC-20, and USDC on ERC-20. Lightning is what FlySafair's reported option uses. That is the main difference between the two routes.

Can I book FlySafair on SatFares?

Our status is "Available". Search your route: if FlySafair flights appear in our live search, you can pay them from your crypto balance like any other airline. Our team books the ticket on request, and nothing is charged until FlySafair issues the e-ticket number. Its hubs are Johannesburg (JNB) and Cape Town (CPT).

Is a crypto payment to FlySafair refunded in bitcoin?

The report does not say. Ask FlySafair before you pay if it matters to you. On SatFares, the rule is written: if the airline cancels, you get a refund in USDT or USDC within 7 days, or a balance credit, as you choose. If you cancel a SatFares booking yourself, the fare rules decide, and any refund goes to your balance.
